MOTO > Restoration > Imperia,1928

Description

The motorcycle came to the Workshop in the end of July 2003. it was an excellent assembly for restoration. The original luggage bags and a lamp in the headlight were safe. It was clear that the motorcycle stayed in the garage for a long time. It was a lucky gain for us. Despite the motorcycle undamaged state we spent a considerable sum of money on restoration of such a rare project. The expenses were so great that the work has not been completed till present moment.

Though it was evident that this motorcycle is a rare type Imperia Sport of 1928 te tasks were not easy. There is no information on this motorcycle in the internet, let alone the materials and repair pieces. Well, it is obvious. The company functioned for a little time and produced just a few motorcycles. Still, it was even more fascinating to work with this sample. It should be mentioned that some months before the appearance of this motorcycle our Workshop got an order for restoration of the motorcycle OF THE SAME MODEL AND OF THE SAME MARK. The assemblage was surely worse. Unfortunately the the customer turned his mind to restore the motorcycle and he sold it. We had only photos left from that motorcycle. And we used them when we were trying to solve the problem with  a stand latch and while making a fuel tank.

Perhaps it will be difficult for you to believe that the fuel tank, which we made, correspond with the original, as the form is really strange. Such a modern custom. The motorcycle, which we received much earlier had the same fuel tank. But it had the logotype. Restoring the fuel tank we couldn’t measure the exact sizes, that’s why we took visual number and the geometry of the motorcycle. But when we got an opportunity to measure the sample, we found out that it wouldn’t fit our motorcycle. Nothing strange – it was a piece-work.

The exhaust system also made us some problems. The starter is odd on the right side, that’s why we had to consider not only symmetry and mounting but also mechanics.

The most part of metallic details underwent corrosion while staying in the garage. We didn’t manage to remove those markings. But we must pay attention to the fact that the detail is original.

The first starting operation of the restored engine took place at the beginning of winter 2004. Then the motorcycle was assembled and tested at slow speed (almost on the ice) and we decided to run it in and give back to the owner. Here we were disappointed. The spark disappeared. We checked the magneto once again. We took into pieces the motor and then assembled it again, we found out some oversights in the assembly (It’s a long lane that has no turning). The deficiencies were removed. The motorcycle started uneasily. Starting the motorcycle with the help of the pusher never crossed our minds. One or maximum two swings of the kick starter will probably make the motorcycle start. But it didn’t start. After exerting all our efforts we finally discovered America . It turned out that the main problem was in the magneto’s magnets. After increasing the number of the magnets on one side (the magneto has two magnets on both sides) we worked out. But to our mind it wasn’t enough. Having consulted with the industries which deal with magnets production, we decided to make our own magnets. Still there were problems. As we were finding deficiencies by trial and error ( who should we ask? Where can we read about this?) we lost starter pinion. Thanks God our Workshop owns fur processing department, by the end of vocations the pinions will loom up.  Then the  test drive will take place. Good journey! The Workshop doesn’t make any models of means of travel. We drive this machinery. Go for a drive with us!
